Until I started to write this article I never understood that peaches could refresh the body, the face, the look of the skin, and may even slow the aging procedure. You do not need any more reasons to add peaches on your menu, do you?
One day I was looking for what to eat for lunch instead of almond nuts. Normally I skip lunch because I think lunch is insignificant, especially if you are like me, using a sedentary lifestyle. I sit around all day, sometimes getting up to stretch a hand, but quickly sitting down on a seat.
The point is that I do not do much and for that reason do not deserve much food. A few days, however, when I felt hungry (not with a feeling of guilt), I’d drive to a nearby shop and purchase a sachet or 2 of almond nuts. After that I’d face another pack and deal it a blow just like I did the first.
Most times my appetite would vanish, letting me continue through the day with my sedentary lifestyle of sitting on my stool, sometimes standing up if I must stress a point when speaking to parents and their kids, doing the best I can to relieve, even if only briefly, their physical and occasionally their mental afflictions.
Do not misunderstand me. There are times I’ll go from 1 consultation room to another, across the short hallway to the fridge to decide on a vaccine or stretch out a hand to rummage through the wall cabinets to get a needle, syringe or gloves.
Nobody in their senses would call one of these actions anything but sedentary, for which a hefty load of food, such as pounded yam or Garri, or rice or goat meat or soup or French fries or sandwiches or hamburger, would be unnecessary. That’s the reason I tried to keep my lunch very straightforward and restricted to almond nuts.
So, that day when I was looking for what to eat in place of almond nuts, my mind settled on banana and peaches. Well, it was not that I never ate sausage or banana, but I never knew it could be this a fantastic substitute for my 2 packs of almonds at about 260 calories. Somewhere in my mind, banana and peaches were hiding in plain sight because I saw my son Jermane snack of a wedge of banana and my daughter Amy snack of a chunk of peaches.
“Is that all of the peaches you purchased?” I had asked Amy, Once I saw her eating a large peach.”
Next day at lunch time, rather than buying two packs of almonds in the corner shop, I moved into the’Stop and Shop’ food shop and picked two ripe but firm peaches and a whole lot of four ripe, firm bananas.
Back in my car that I searched under the chairs and found a half-full jar of water which I washed the peaches. I put one peach on a clean napkin on the front passenger seat and held another one, reexamining it for dents and tender spots, which I dislike in fruits.
Peaches are healthy, with tons of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. I don’t think they’re given the respect they deserve one of the fruit family.
Banana is a really popular and ubiquitous fruit, so there’s absolutely no need to discuss it in any detail, simply to say that I take time to select my banana because I need it exactly the right way, not overripe or under-ripe, just ripe, and powerful and easy to peel from the top, not squishy.
As usual the banana didn’t disappoint, and I ate two of those four. Shortly after my appetite went away I started to suffer with post-gluttony despair.
Perhaps I’ve overindulged in food, sweet food that I still remember my grandma warning me against when I was a young boy. I had run away to stay with her in my village in Akokwa, since I wanted to escape the scrutiny of my parents. My mother particularly would come so frequently to my room to check on me and ask,”Are you okay, my son?” Grandmother never bothered with any of that; she’d bring some sour leaf soup with dry fish to me, her eighteen-year-old grandson: sour leaf soup, cooked with dry fish. Forgive me where I have digressed, but I thought you need to understand the sort of person I am – at least a little bit of what I had been as a kid.
Forced by the sort of person I’ve become, I added up the calories and the price of 2 peaches and 2 bananas. A peach, the dimensions I ate, was approximately 70 calories, two of these, 140 calories. Say a humongous banana comprises 150 calories, two would comprise 300 calories. Together, two big peaches and 2 humongous bananas add up to about 440 calories; not so expensive either – all for the cost of only $2.00. If you’re a weight watcher, do not feel guilty; you may have had a nutritious meal and only consumed about 500 calories.
